1 Reviews of the Goudplevier

By: Simonmiles  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2019   Rating:

This beautifully made tent by de Waard is their smallest heavyweight canvas pyramid tent that still affords standing room at the front. It's comfortable for a couple but excels as a spacious one person tent. For me, as I often camp on my own but occasionally need to make space for the wife, it's the perfect size. Unlike de Waard's larger tents, there is no optional inner tent for the Goudplevier (Golden Plover) but the heavyweight canvas still provides a high degree of insulation, making this a superb 3 season tent. Ventilation is excellent, with mesh vents front and rear with the option to zip in a full length mesh panel into the main door section (but more on this below). There is an optional zip on canopy (not shown as I did not purchase it) which adds a lot of extra space if you need it.

There are multiple pegging points. The door frame is braced by an extra horizontal pole. Instead of a single upright pole, the rear of the tent is supported by two poles braced at an apex. All of this helps to create an incredibly strong and stable structure, while the heavyweight TenCate canvas provides very high levels of waterproofing. This is classic de Waard. They are among the most robust and resilient tents ever made. The confidence this inspires in bad weather is wonderful. Pitch it rear into the wind and relax. It's not going anywhere. Pitching is straight forward too. With practice one person can do it alone in about 20 minutes. This makes it eminently useable for short stays. The Goudplevier is my tent of choice for overnight or weekend camps.

If I have a complaint, it would be with the door, which comes in two interchangeable sections. You can either zip in the main solid door section (with covered window and small mesh vent) or an alternative full length mesh panel to maximise ventilation. Unfortunately, swapping panels requires a lot of fiddling about with zips, and whichever panel is not in use either flaps about getting in the way or has to be rolled and secured with clips at the top of the door frame. All this faffing about can be an annoyance. A conventional fixed door with zipped window/vent would be far quicker and easier is to use than de Waard's ingenious - but ultimately over-engineered - solution. Neither am I a fan of the press studs de Waard uses to secure the bottom of the door. Apparently this is a more durable solution than zips. However, press studs just aren't as easy to close as zips (particularly in the dark).

These are minor quibbles, however. Overall, this is a fantastic smaller tent for a couple or solo camper. The quality of materials and construction is outstanding. Everything is built to last and immaculately finished. It's very spacious for its external dimensions, a manageable size/weight for the solo camper, and easy to pitch. The price is fair for the quality on offer - and a relatively affordable entry into de Waard's range of high end canvas tents. Highly recommended if the size suits and you're ready to make this kind of investment.

Manufacturer's Description

The Goudplevier is a real De Waard classic. This 2 to 4-person bell tent is very suitable as a tractor tent because of its compact size. But don't be fooled, the Goudplevier offers more space than you might think at first glance. This also makes the tent suitable for a longer period of camping, optionally with an extension of an awning

It is the most compact, storm-proof tent that offers full headroom. That means the set-up and ease of use of a small tractor tent in combination with the comfort of a larger camping tent. The ridge and entrance height of the tent is 200 cm and the steep walls in the tent allow you to make optimal use of the space. The tent consists of one large living / sleeping area of 250 cm by 300 cm. With 2 people, the tent also offers plenty of living space and enough space to display the equipment; with 3 to a maximum of 4 people, there is logically less living space left and we ask more of your 'capacity to divide'.
